In this article I will take a look at how the online poker training sites have been, or will be, affected in the wake of the US crackdown on online poker that took place on April 15th, 2011 –now infamously known as Black Friday in the poker world.

There has been quite a bit of fallout after the US Government cracked-down on online poker by seizing the domain names of PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Absolute/UB Poker and indicting 11 people that were either associated with the sites or processed payments for them. Not only have PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker left the US market –while Absolute Poker thumbs its nose at the FBI and DOJ—but we’ve also seen a number of poker tours cease to exist like Full Tilt Poker’s Onyx Cup Series and the PokerStars NAPT, as well as a number of networks pulling some of their poker programming. But what has the impact been on online poker training sites?

Cardrunners

One site that will be hard hit will be Cardrunners, which had an exclusive deal with Full Tilt Poker that allowed players to purchase Cardrunners memberships directly from the Full Tilt Poker store –which was a great source of new players for the site. Obviously this in no way spells the end for what is the most well-known online poker training site, but it will force Cardrunners to explore new marketing options –not to mention all Cardrunners instructors were granted “Red Pro” status at Full Tilt Poker, giving them some added income as well as increased notoriety.

I would expect Cardrunners to really start pushing their renewals, considering their biggest pipeline for new members has basically dried up.

BlueFire Poker

BlueFire Poker owner Phil Galfond released a short statement on the site’s forums in the aftermath of Black Friday stating:

I just want to assure everyone that BluefirePoker is not going to be shut down. We will still be making quality videos at the same rate as always.
I’ve been working with some of our pros to come up with creative ways to make videos.
In fact, if anyone has some suggestions for video formats, please post them here or in the video suggestions forum.
Thanks, guys. Take care.
-Phil

BlueFire has also gone to great lengths over the years to translate videos into French which will help them reach a wider global market. Of all of the top online poker training sites my money would be on BlueFire Poker being the least impacted by the fiasco that is Black Friday.

Remember you can get a $20 discount at BlueFire Poker by using the coupon: ptr20

Deuces Cracked

Deuces Cracked is another online poker training site that will have to rethink its marketing campaign, and possibly look into expanding into new markets. I would bet that most online poker training sites are looking into subtitling their existing content, and DC is one of the few sites that have the capital to do so –after all DC Founder Jay Rosenkrantz is already in contact with people who could undertake a subtitling project since he has asked people to do the same thing for his animated poker series The Micros.

In the wake of the Black Friday developments that saw PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and the Cereus Poker Network leave the US online poker market, one of the top online poker training sites in the growing world of online poker training, DragtheBar.com, has just announced a new partnership with the new #1 ranked US-friendly poker room in the world Carbon Poker—which is part of the Merge Gaming Network. In order to receive free access to DragtheBar.com all a Carbon Poker player has to do is rake $1 at Carbon Poker and they will be given 30-days access to DragtheBar’s massive library of poker training videos!

>> Visit Drag the Bar <<

After the initial 30-day period players will receive for raking just a single $1, players can continue to receive more free months at DragtheBar by raking $500 per month at Carbon Poker, or you can simply choose to join the site for their low monthly rate. With over 1,000 videos currently in their video library, not to mention that DragtheBar also adds roughly 40 new poker training videos each month, there will always be loads of content –both new and old—for members to peruse.

DragtheBar employs one of the top online poker coaching teams in the industry. Members of the site will learn to crush a number of different poker disciplines from such top players as Hunter “BeachJustice” Bick, Dusty “Leatherass9” Schmidt, Paul “GiantBuddha” Hoppe, Matt “mbolt” Bolt, James “JamesD282” Davis and “IggyMcfly”.

Carbon Poker is the flagship site of the Merge Gaming Network which after the recent departure of PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and the Cereus Poker Network rooms of Absolute Poker and UB Poker has moved into the top spot in terms of traffic for US-friendly online poker rooms. According to the tracking site www.highstakesdb.com, the Merge Gaming Network has seen a traffic increase of over 30% since Black Friday, and has seen its peak traffic explode from about 1,500 real-money cash-game players to around 2,300 real-money cash-game players. Overall the network had nearly 7,500 players online during peak hours and was running a very impressive 200 or so tournaments running during that period!

This traffic surge has seen the Merge Gaming Network leap from a ranking in the mid-20’s all the way up to #11 at the time of writing –and it’s likely the poker network, led by Carbon Poker, will be in the Top 10 by the end of the week.

So if you are looking for a new US-friendly online poker room, and/or have been considering joining an online poker training site like DragtheBar.com, might I suggest you kill two birds with one stone and sign up for Carbon Poker’s exclusive new deal for free DragtheBar training.

It appears that online poker legend and Drag the Bar coach Dusty “Leatherass9” Schmidt will be representing PokerStars for at least another year, as the world’s largest online poker room, PokerStars, has confirmed they have renewed Schmidt’s contract for another year as a member of PokerStars Team Online.

The deal will keep Schmidt in PokerStars gear, and grinding away at the site’s mid-stakes No Limit Holdem tables through April 2012. Keeping Schmidt “patched-up” should work out very well for PokerStars as the former online cash game grinder has made huge strides in his tournament game over the past year and has been seeing those efforts born out in the form of a couple of cashes on the live tournament trail –the first in last year’s $2,500 NLHE event at the WSOP, and more recently at the Big Event Main Event in Los Angeles where he finished the Main Event in 40th place.

In a post on the PokerStars blog Schmidt stated: “I have considered it a privilege and an honor to promote PokerStars in any way I can. I played on there for the vast majority of my poker throughout my career so it is great to be able to represent a company that I 100% believe in. I have had a few things come across my desk that folks have asked me to endorse and the bottom line is if I don’t think it is a great product, I am not going to represent it, bottom line.”

Schmidt began his poker career after a heart attack derailed his goal of making the PGA tour and has been grinding away at the mid-stakes No Limit Holdem tables for years now and has earned over $3 million playing online poker. His style is very methodical and focuses on pushing every little edge available, regardless of whether it is a $50 bonus or working on 4-betting from the button against the Big Blind –In Schmidt’s view, no edge is too small to pass up!

Schmidt first came to prominence as an online poker coach at the now defunct StoxPoker before taking his skills over to DragtheBar.com. Schmidt’s students love his no-nonsense approach to the game and the way he treats the game like a small business –which led to him penning his first poker book, Treat Your Poker Like a Business. Schmidt has since followed up on the success of Treat Your Poker Like a Business with his second poker offering, the dubiously titled Don’t Listen to Phil Hellmuth, which he co-authored with fellow DragtheBar coach Paul Hoppe. Schmidt is also working on a follow-up to TYPLAB titled, Treat Your Poker Like a Business II!

So, congratulations to DragtheBar’s Dusty “Leatherass” Schmidt on extending his sponsorship deal for at least another year at PokerStars.

In a blog post at Deuces Cracked this past week co-founder Jay Rosenkrantz talked about the upcoming schedule of video releases on Deuces Cracked this season –for those that are unaware DC separates their content into “seasons”, about four or five per year, where each instructor produces a pre-planned video series in that time-frame—including 2011’s series such as On Balance, The Thin Red Grind, Math Attacks!, pr1nnyraiding 3, and Ansky and Blah.

However, the big news came towards the tail-end of the post as Krantz offhandedly remarks how Deuces Cracked now has over 2,000 videos in their library! A number only the slightly older Cardrunners can boast –and if you recall when Cardrunners hit the 2,000-video milestone boast they did!

But Deuces Cracked took the more subtle approach to their 2,000th poker training video, which was almost expected from the online poker training site that has perhaps the most successful poker players on their roster –and at DC they all produce content.

Krantz detailed how the idea for Deuces Cracked came about in 2007, when he was running the original online poker training site 3-Bet.com, when he joined forces with online poker players/coaches DanzaSmack, DeathDonkey, Joe Tall, and Entity to form Deuces Cracked; an online poker training site that didn’t simply produce poker videos –Cardrunners and StoxPoker were already doing that—but created videos in episodic series, or as Krantz puts it: “What if you could follow the development of a concept, or your favorite instructor’s progression through the stakes over a set period of time? It clicked right away. It would work like a TV network!” And this is where the idea of ‘seasons’ came in.

What separates Deuces Cracked’s content from other online poker training sites? It’s mostly creativity in their content; not only do they produce video series but the site has also introduced DC Shorts, which are quick 20 minute videos for people with less time, or for those feeling out a certain concept before jumping into a 4-part video series each over 1-hour in length! Here is how Krantz views the content at DC:

“We always ask ourselves: will this be fun to watch? Would we watch it? Will it put people to sleep? Will it make you better at poker? Is it answering relevant questions? The way all of us on the content end of things look at it is, if we’re adding another video to that huge library… it better make its presence felt. We are looking for lasting impact, we are looking to pioneer new methods of teaching to help you better absorb the concepts you need to win more money at poker. In my opinion, this year may be our best year of videos yet. There will be new combinations of instructors, new ideas, new ways of presenting old concepts, old ideas updated for the modern, constantly changing playing environments. More and better community involvement. DC Shorts. Because sometimes 20 minutes a day is just enough.”

So, CONGRATULATIONS to Deuces Cracked! The online poker training site that delicately announced it had surpassed the 2,000 video milestone.

Each new coach on the Cardrunners roster brings their own area of expertise, and two are very specific in terms of their specialty: One being Rush Poker and the other being in low buy-in Multi-Table Tournaments.

	Small Stakes MTT coach ‘SpurrierFTW’
SpurrierFTW is a student at the University of South Carolina who has been playing poker since High School, and has been a serious student of the game since 2005. Beginning as a cash-game player, SpurrierFTW has been successful up to the $200 buy-in cash games in both Holdem and PLO, but has switched his focus to low buy-in Multi-Table Tournaments over the past year.
His experience and current knowledge of the small-stakes games will be well received by the new players signing up at Cardrunners who may be overwhelmed with the majority of the training videos on the site focusing on strategies and concepts presented for mid and high-stakes games.

Rush Poker Pro Greg “Xorc1st” Shevach
A former competitive video game player, Xorc1st has seamlessly transferred his skills to the online poker tables, and has been focusing on the fast and furious action at the Rush Poker tables on Full Tilt Poker.
When asked what he will bring to Cardrunners through his training videos Xorc1st replied: “I really hope to give people another way of thinking in the game of poker. Not every decision is straight-forward and I will push people to think outside of the box and question themselves. What would happen if I made this play? What would I be representing & is it plausible? What does he think I’m representing? The questions are endless and it’s crazy to have all of these questions fly through your head and be able to make a decision within seconds.”

MTT coach Adam “Fishbones11″ Fyshe
With over $1million in online poker tournament winnings, and as former Top 100 ranked online tournament player, Fishbones11 is the most successful of Cardrunners new hires. A poker player since 2005, Fishbones11 didn’t “make it” in the poker world until 2007, when on whim he played the $109 rebuy on PokerStars and won $35,000, which he promptly followed up with a $60,000 chop in the Super Tuesday tournament just a few days later. Even with his success in high-stakes MTT’s, Fishbones11 has moved down to low and mid-stakes tournaments where he sees weaker competition and better opportunities for success. Look for these new coaches’ videos next time you visit Cardrunners, the only online poker training site who releases a new training video daily.

The Phil Galfond owned BlueFire Poker has been making a number of major upgrades to the site since the beginning of 2011, and I recently received word that another major upgrade is in the works: The creation of a Multi-Table Tournament coaching team. The news is still in the unofficial stages, but you can expect an announcement in the coming weeks, and a whole new cast of coaches to be added to the site.

BlueFire Poker’s upgrades began with an overhaul to the site, featuring a new design, updated profiles on their coaches, and the addition of more top talent to the site’s roster. These changes were followed by BlueFire Poker’s creation of a Sit & Go training team; a huge step in the online poker training site’s development as up until this point they were basically a cash game training site.
The new cash-game poker coaches brought into the BlueFire Poker mix were: Alix Martin, Alan Jackson and Neil Gerwitz. The trio will be joining the already formidable BlueFire lineup that includes Founder and Owner Phil “OMGClayAiken” Galfond, Jason “PBJaxx” Senti, Martin “Dr Giggy” Giguere-Fournier, Niman “Samoleus” Kenkre, and former full-time and now Guest Pro Don “SoCalQuest” Nguyen.

>> Visit Bluefire Poker <<

The Sit & Go team hand-picked by Phil Galfond was five players strong and includes some of the best S&G grinders in all of online poker:

Chip ‘z32fanatic’ Ferguson

Darin ‘DarinVG’ Van Gammeran

Brian ‘bfizz’ Fite

Ryan ‘DieBanksters’ Peterson

Andy ‘Raizin Azian’ Carlson

In a recent correspondence with the site I was told they would be adding even more talent to the roster in the near future in the form of a multi-table tournament team, which will complete the evolution of BlueFire Poker from a strictly cash-game site to one of the top all around online poker training sites in the market.

There is still no word yet on who the new additions to the site will be, but BlueFire poker is known for having one of the toughest vetting processes in the online training industry. One player who is likely to head-up the MTT team is current BlueFire Poker coach Jason Senti. Senti finished in 7th place at the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event, and proved his tournament chops by winning the Minnesota Poker Championships just a few months later, and followed that up with a 14th place finish in the recently completed LA Poker Classic.

I’d expect BlueFire Poker to come out all guns blazing, and create a formidable team of Multi-table tournament coaches –likely to match the Sit and Go Team that was created in both talent and size—and will likely feature a strong mix of known talent, as well as a few wild cards thrown in, considering Galfond has done an excellent job of picking relatively unknown players for the site, only to see them not only continue to grow as poker players but also become terrific online poker coaches –See the aforementioned Senti!

On Sunday, BlueFire Poker released their online poker documentary, A Kids Game: The Story of Online Poker. The 70 minute video produced by Li Dong is only available to BlueFire Poker members, and features a number of online poker’s top players in a series of candid interviews discussing everything from their childhood, to their highs and lows at the poker tables.
With a cast that includes:

•	Thuy “ShesNoGood” Doan
•	Alexei “MagicNinja” Martov
•	Di “URinDanger” Dang
•	Hac “trex313” Dang
•	Peter “apathy” Jetten
•	Isaac “LuvtheWNBA” Haxton
•	Andrew “Good2CU” Robl
•	Martin “Dr Giggy” Giguere

The topics discussed in the documentary include a hodgepodge of different things including what role ‘ego’ plays in the success of online poker, what role logical thinking plays, and how the very best poker players have a certain type of drive to be the very best. This drive seemed to be the consensus reason for why poker players are willing to play extremely high, always pushing the envelope, and challenge the very best.

In one of the early segments, Andrew “GooD2cu” Robl opines on why so many young players are the best online poker players in the world –Robl says they are almost all under 26, and he’s probably about 80% right. I’m sure Phil Ivey, Patrik Antonius, Phil Galfond, and a few others of the very best online poker players would argue this point, but overall I would bet that 80% of the top players are under 26.
Another interesting turn in the conversation is the poker lifestyle, and how they have found that they get extremely lazy, especially as they become more successful. Perhaps my favorite line of the movie is Shaun Deeb saying, “I basically suck at life, but I’m good at poker.”

The conversation also turned comical when the subject of prop betting came up: Everything from credit card roulette, to picking which hand a peanut happens to be in is talked about, and the money won and lost seemed to be completely lost on all of the players; what they seemed to relish was the social aspect of the betting and trying to outsmart their friends.

They also spoke about the “Old Days” of online poker when almost every player was simply terrible, and they can no longer “print money” at the online poker tables. Isaac Haxton spoke about how hard it was to have just a couple losing days in a row, and Andrew Robl speaks about the ratio of good to bad players completely flip-flopping in the last five years.

The end of the documentary covers the time from the UIGEA legislation, to the drying up of the online poker games, to their thoughts on the future of online poker.

Overall, the documentary is an entertaining and insightful look into the world of these young online poker pros. Well worth the price of admission on BlueFire Poker is the segment on the players’ worst TILT moments, it makes me seem like a calm rational person, and I’ve thrown my computer chair into (YES INTO) my wall.

We all expect names like ‘nanonoko’, ‘luckychewy’, and ‘jungleman12’ to be amongst the biggest winners in the online poker rankings, but a quick look at the early results from the 2011 tournament season shows a number of online poker stars making the transition to live tournaments, and many of them having tremendous success. I expect this trend to continue as more and more of these young poker pros are being signed to sponsorship deals and given the opportunity to shine at major poker tournaments.

Amongst this group of online poker stars is a contingent of coaches from a number of different online poker training sites like PokerXFactor, Leggo Poker, Cardrunners, and PokerNews Strategy.
PokerNews Strategy’s Randy ‘nanonoko’ Lew, mostly known for his unbelievable multi-tabling abilities in online poker cash games, made a very deep run in the 2011 Aussie Millions Main Event finishing in 10th place, cashing for $100,000. Lew is not known for being a tournament player, but if you’re good at poker, you’re good at poker –if nanonoko plays a bunch of live tournaments in 2011 you can expect very good results.

Poker X Factor coach Chris “Fox” Wallace ended up in 3rd place at the Caesar’s Winter Open Main Event, pocketing nearly $25,000. Wallace is the author of No Limits, and has been doling out thoughts and strategies for years now –look for him to make a big splash on the live tournament trail this year as he has committed himself to play more events.

Andrew ‘luckychewy’ Lichtenberger, a contributing coach at Leggo Poker found himself at the final table of the $100k Super-High-Roller tournament at the PCA, before eventually bowing out in 7th place. Just the fact that a player has the bank to play in this tournament is quite impressive!

Some other poker coaches who played in these big buy-in events –with less success than LuckyChewy—were PokerNews Strategy front-man Tony G who played in the $100k Super-High-Roller tournament at the Aussie Millions, while Cardrunners coach Daniel ‘jungleman12’ Cates took part in the $100k tournaments at the Aussie Millions and PCA, as well as the $250k tournament at the Aussie Millions –unfortunately for the duo that was $550,000 in entry-fees with $0 return.

Some other online poker coaches to keep an eye on at major tournaments in 2011 include Dani “Ansky” Stern from Deuces Cracked –along with DC’s Vanessa Selbst of course; Newly signed PokerStars Pro Andrew “Foucault82’ Brokos of PokerSavvy Plus; Host of a new segment on the WPT Tony “Bond18” Dunst who is another top poker coach at PokerSavvy Plus; and Leggo Poker’s Richard ‘nutsinho’ Lyndaker.
Of course other names from the online poker coaching ranks will likely come to the forefront as well during the 2011 tournament season, and we’ll be sure to keep you abreast of all of the developments on this front.

Online poker’s biggest winner in 2010, and Cardrunners coach, Daniel ‘jungleman12’ Cates is apparently trying to make the transition from online poker success to live poker success in 2011 –which is where the sponsorship money can be found. Having already played at the Pokerstars PCA and Aussie Millions in 2011, and participating in a full slate of scheduled tournaments. Of course he is not giving up his online poker roots by any means, and in addition to continuing his domination of Tom Dwan in the durrrr Challenge, he has also battled Isildur1 in the PokerStars Superstar Showdown, and been a major force in the nosebleed games across the Internet.

Visit CardRunners Now!

Cates has already participated in the $100k Super-High-Roller tournament at the PCA, the $100k Challenge at the Aussie Millions, and the $250k Super-Duper-High-Roller tournament at the Aussie Millions; not to mention playing in the tournament series’ Main Events as well as some of the other preliminary events. While he’s put up a big donut up to this point, nobody in the poker world expects that to continue, especially now that he is 21 and can play a full slate of live poker tournaments.

Cates has also been active in the cash-games that accompany these major tournaments, even trying his hand in the Aussie Millions televised cash-game: The Million Dollar Cash Game.

Cates will also likely be a hot topic throughout 2011 as he continues his challenge match against Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan where he currently has a nearly $900k lead with 17,000 of the 50,000 hands completed –should Cates come out on top when all is said and done Dwan will be on the hook for a further $1.5 million; on the flipside, if Dwan manages to come-back and win the challenge Cates will owe him a further $500k.

In another high-profile challenge match Cates took on Viktor “Isildur1” Blom over at PokerStars in the site’s Superstar Showdown series –basically a pared down version of the durrrr Challenge, which lasts 2,500 hands instead of 50,000—and fared far worse than he has in the durrrr Challenge. Isildur1 was able to take $51,000 off of Cates during the session, which was played across four $50/$100 No Limit Holdem tables.

Based on the high-profile tournaments he has been attending, the big challenge matches, and his continued involvement in the highest stakes games in online poker my guess is that Cates is looking at 2011 as his breakout year in the world of mainstream poker –obviously 2010 was his breakout year for online poker! My guess is he will continue to shun any sponsorship offers until he overcomes the up-and-comer moniker he currently has, and cements himself as one of the top poker players in the world; on par with Phil Ivey, Patrik Antonius, Daniel Negreanu, and Tom Dwan. Based on his reputation amongst his peers and his incredible success in 2010, Cates will move into that category without any problem –of course winning a major tournament would hasten his mainstream arrival!

Deuces Cracked executive producer Jay Rosenkrantz has linked up with PokerTrainingReviews.net this week for a quick question and answers interview. Jay is a well established high stakes no limit holdem and PLO player and currently makes poker training videos for Deuces Cracked. In recent times Jay has got into the TV production of poker content – namely the famous 2M2MM and even more recently, The Micros.

Hi Jay, thanks for doing this interview with PokerTrainingReviews.net

1. How did you get involved in poker initially and how did you become one of the top players in the world today?

Rounders was an inspiration. Years later I found twoplustwo.com and got heavily involved during a time in which many of today’s best players were learning the game and sharing information… I was lucky to be there and get obsessed with online poker at the right time I suppose. I’m a very intuitive person and I always challenged myself against the best players at every level I played, this combined with playing and analyzing tens of thousands of hands each month was a big factor in my success. I think one advantage I had that many of my friends didn’t was that I did a lot of coaching. You learn a lot from your students and if you’re passionate about it, you push yourself to do the best analysis possible for them and you notice many strong and weak traits that other types of players have. It also didn’t hurt that I had some great friends who were just as good if not better than me — we talked a ton of poker every day.

2. Who has been the biggest influence to you in regards to excelling at online poker?

Brian Roberts (flawless_victory) and Emil Patel (whitelime). Brian taught me that playing anything less than my A game is shameful, he might be the fiercest competitor out there. Emil and I lived together for two years — his approach to poker was far more mathematical than mine, and talking poker with him 24/7 opened up my game in ways I hadn’t previously considered before meeting him.

3. What games are you playing at the moment? How are you running?

I’m playing a little 6max and HUNL, and some HUPLO. I’m running very well for the last 15k hands but I’m really not able to play much at all lately. Also trying to play some of the big tournaments, both online and live.

4. What qualities do you feel stop a small and mid-stakes player from playing high stakes successfully?

Poor work ethic, lack of creativity, an aversion to risk and poor emotional control. Tilt has to be the biggest problem for everyone.

5. In the TV series 2M2MM, you seem to have affected quite badly by bad beats and tilt. Do you consider this a big leak in your game? Have you any other leaks you feel you need to address?

I don’t consider it a leak anymore, but it used to be for sure. I didn’t tilt like your average tilter, but if you call anything less than A game poker being on tilt, I was on tilt more than I should have been. Playing “messy” poker or whatnot. I’d say the biggest leak in my game has always been my mathematics, if I was playing full-time at the moment I’d be studying up on that hard.

6. Do you let poker affect your personal life and relationship with others? How do you think one can detach from a bad day at the tables, and how important is it?

Sometimes there’s nothing you can do — you have a bad day, try to let it wash off you but can’t. But it’s important to understand that a bad day at the tables is not a big losing day. A bad day is when you play worse than you should have, when you make too many mistakes, when you don’t learn anything from it. Poker is a long run game, once you internalize that concept philosophically, and assuming you have learned how to manage your bankroll properly, you won’t have this problem as often.

7. If there is one thing you would change in your poker past, what would it be?
I would have ran really hot at 500/1k NL in 2008 and made $10 million, then multitabled Ivey, Antonius, Galfond and Dwan until I had $50 million. If I made $50 million before I busted, I’d bet it all on blackjack and let it ride until I had $1 billion. And I’d use that money to build a spaceship.

8. Who do you think is the best; a} NLHE and b} PLO player in the world today?
Hard to say, there are too many good players. Tom Dwan, Phil Galfond, those guys are up there.

9. What do you feel the future holds for high stakes poker games?
CHINA!!!

10. Describe a typical day in your life.
Wake up, do some reading in the morning — Google Reader feeds, some books. Lately I’ve been reading about how to prepare for a zombie apocalypse. Have some breakfast, work out, walk the dog. The rest of the day I’m working on DeucesCracked, BOOM, or the Micros until my brain burns out. Then I’ll hang out w the gf and watch some TV/movies — sometimes apocalyptic, sometimes not. LOST is really good. Sometimes there is coffee involved, sometimes not. Sometimes I’ll travel to Seattle or LA or a foreign land in which I visit the odd museum or sandwich shop. For a few days straight I played Uncharted 2 until I beat it on PS3, then I had McDonalds. I’ve watched Food Inc and Super Size Me, but damn if I don’t love those cheesburgers.

11. With the release of 2M2MM and The Micros, you seem to have a great interest in TV/video production. Where do you see this leading to in the future?
I’d like to be a creator and storyteller that can affect larger and larger audiences. They say to write what you know — I know poker, but I know some other things too. So I’m hoping to continue to improve my craft and continue moving up in stakes :-)

12. Do you think this (TV production) is important for poker?
Well, I do it because it’s a fun and interesting way to spend my time. But poker has notoriously suffered from a dearth of good storytelling, and I do think it’s important that we have some work that can entertain and is worth sharing with friends and family. Especially since there have always been so many misconceptions about what it is like to be a poker player.

13. As one of the founders of Deuces Cracked, a leading poker training site, your poker videos have been watched my countless poker players. How has this affected your play?
It hasn’t really affected my play at all. Most players watching my videos aren’t the ones I’d be playing, and the ones I’d be playing are already good enough where there’s way more to gain from just playing me and studying the hands we play than studying my videos. I’m sure there are some people who have been able to get a feel for the way I think, but you have to design your strategies with the expectation that your opponents are operating with lots of information. Especially in 2011 with all the technology at hand.

14. DeucesCracked released a heads up NLHE poker training video featuring you playing isildur1 before he became as prolific as he is today. What did you think of him initially and how has that changed today?

I thought he was really talented and a very original player — that hasn’t changed. I learned a lot from playing him and watching him play. Particularly his overbet strategies, that opened my eyes a bit at a time when I thought I had thought about everything possible related to NLHE.

15. How do you feel poker training sites have changed the poker industry?
They’ve made it easier to process all the information out there, and provided a more efficient structure for learning than we had before they existed.

16. How important is a poker training site to a player or should they be doing anything extra to stay ahead of the learning curve?
Very important to anyone who has aspirations of becoming a better player and moving up in stakes. Your opponents are watching videos, learning how to get better, applying what they have learned. Unless you are a poker genius you need to study your craft somewhat if you hope to keep up, and training sites are the best way to do that. Where else do you have such a concentration of strong and experienced poker minds dedicated to teaching you how to improve?

17. Do you consider yourself more a poker player or an entrepreneur? Do you have any business interests outside of poker? If so can you share some details with us?
Being a poker player = being an entrepreneur. I’d call myself more of an inventor. An art physicist. Something like that. Everything I do business-wise deals with strategy and risk, and in that sense I am always playing poker and juggling variables in my head.

18. What’s the most baller thing you bought to date? Do you spend money extravagantly or are you conservative?
I bought like a $14k Breguet watch when I was on a $500k downswing :-) I love that watch. It’s really cool looking and classy. I used to spend like a fool, now I’m much more conservative. I bought my dog a giant clock tower to sleep in — now that is baller.

19. Have you travelled much? Any plans to travel in the near future and where?
Poker has afforded me the luxury of travel, so I’ve been to a lot of different places over the past few years. England, France, Denmark, Israel, Peru, Australia. In the next few years I’d like to travel some more and check out some of the major poker tournaments I’ve yet to attend. They make a pretty good excuse to take a vacation.

20. Where do you see Deuces Cracked in 10 years time?
Well that depends — is there a zombie apocalypse or isn’t there? Assuming there isn’t, I’d hope we’ve made enough money where I’m able to buy my own spaceship. And to do that we’ll have had to continue to innovate technology and pioneer new ways of thinking, to grow our community, and to 4-bet bluff when stacks are optimal.

Thanks for taking the time to do this Jay and we wish you all the best in your future adventures.

Live long and profit.
