Poker Zion Review

PokerZion.com

PokerZion takes a slightly different approach than the other poker training sites: PokerZion gives its members a more ‘hands-on’ training program, where each player is paired up with one of the sites pro’s. PokerZion is more of mentoring site; instead of giving players access to their content, and assuming they will be able to implement it; PokerZion helps guide the player through the program.

Poker Zion’s professional poker players will direct the new members through the site’s “Iron Lion” program. The designated pro will mentor the player throughout the program; by offering analysis and feedback for the lessons.

Upon joining each player will be given a detailed assessment, to determine: Their level of play, holes in their game, and areas of focus. After the initial assessment players will be tested on poker theory and how they implement the strategies they have learned. Aside from these ‘written exams’ players also have access to the PokerZion library of videos, and other exclusive content.

Strengths

PokerZion’s main strength is in the 1-on-1 nature of the training. I always prefer the 1-on-1 approach since the mentor will have a vested interest in your success: After all, if you fail, than so has your coach! It also gives the instructor a better feel for your strengths and weaknesses, allowing them to tailor their advice to fit your specific needs.

A portion of PokerZion’s videos also contain a unique quality: When a decision comes about, the video is paused, and the player is given a series of multiple choice answers to choose from. This allows the site to ‘grade’ your answers, and develop a more personalized experience as you progress through the Iron Lion program. After making a selection the video resumes, with the pro explaining the correct action taken.

Weaknesses

PokerZion’s main weakness is the size of their video library and the lack of diversity –currently there are no videos apart from ‘No Limit Holdem’.

Another issue the site has is the absence of a big name, or well known online players. However, those familiar with internet poker will know of the stellar reputations of their MTT mentor Tyler "tnetter" Netter (over $1.5 million in tournament earnings) and cash game specialist Russell "Loosefer" Blattberg.

The four main instructors at PokerZion are:

• John "nagarjuna" Anhalt
• Tyler "tnetter" Netter
• Russell "Loosefer" Blattberg
• Andreas "JungleRumbler" Johansson

One interesting fact about the site is that one of the instructors has actually come through the PokerZion mentoring program. This accomplishment alone demonstrates just how effective the personal mentoring system employed by the site can be.

Video Library Summary:

Videos – Almost 200 videos
No Limit Hold’ Em – Approximately 60 videos –low to mid stakes

Written Content:
As previously noted, players are given written assessments and exams to perform, and are given a 48 page e-book to study after signing up. PokerZion also has an article library for players to peruse; and the customary blog and forum sections on their site.

Poker Zion also archives their pro chat sessions and workshops; but this feature is only available to Black Chip members.

In the written content area, they also have what are called learning modules which include over 120 pages of written material to study.

Goodies:

Here is where PokerZion can claim superiority over the other poker training sites. However, most of the ‘goodies’ are only available to Black Chip members (see pricing for more details).

• PokerZion features a hand Advisor to help players with their pre-flop and post-flop decisions.
• A few times each month the PokerZion pros host conference calls, covering a variety of topics.
• PokerZion offers lecture-style workshops, where members will meet in a virtual classroom environment. Specific topics are covered, followed by a Q&A session.
• Real-time sweat sessions. PokerZion offers its members the chance to chat with their mentor during a real session. During the session the pro will reveal their hole cards and explain their actions.

Price

PokerZion has one of the more complicated pricing options; ranging from a free demo, to a $2.99 3-day trial, up to $28.95/month for a Black Chip membership. Each membership stage allows certain access to the site and privileges.

White Chip –FREE demo account –offers very limited access to the site, but is a much nicer ‘tour’ than other poker training sites offer.

Red Chip --$14.95 one-time fee – The Red Chip membership gives you slightly more access to the site (member only forum and quiz results) but only allows access to 10 videos.

Green Chip --$19.95/month – This is the first ‘real’ membership to the site: access to the video library, video trainers, and pro chats.

Black Chip --$28.95/month – The Black Chip membership unlocks the entire site to you. This is the mentoring membership as well as complete access to the sites archives of chat logs and past workshops.

PokerZion accepts major credit cards, PayPal, and also site transfers from PokerStars and Absolute Poker.

The Verdict: Score: 8/10
PokerZion differ from the standard training sites by taking a hands on approach with their students. Each member is personally coached by one of the sites professional players. Coupled with their interactive tests and assignments, PokerZion is a highly recommended option for those looking to improve their poker theory and skills in order to move up to mid stakes and beyond.
