PokerNews is the brain-child of Tony G, the outspoken brash poker pro who has had more success away from the poker tables –creating numerous poker-related businesses and side projects—than his considerable achievements at the poker tables. Poker News is best known for its media arm, which is considered one of the best in the business, but they have also been tinkering with the idea of creating an online poker training site for some time now, and after a first attempt in 2009 they have relaunched the online poker training site with even more big-name instructors, more content, and a better overall product.

As with all relatively new online poker training sites, PokerNews Strategy is entering a very competitive market against competitors who have amassed years worth of content, which the PokerNews Strategy team is counteracting with some up-and-coming instructors instead of the usual MO of picking off a few of their competitors coaches. This makes the content on PokerNews Strategy quite refreshing in its originality.

Headlining the site is of course Tony G himself, but also online superstars Randy “Nanonoko” Lew, 2010 WSOP bracelet winner Josh “LitleBastrd” Tieman, and one of online poker’s original stars Dustin “neverwin” Woolf. PokerNews Strategy has also signed online poker phenom URnotINdanger2 as an instructor, and in doing so corroborated his identity as Scott Palmer. With the recent signing of John “UMD Tennis” O’Rourke, Pokernews Strategy are making a big noise in the poker training world, who after just a short period of operation boast one of the best coaching rosters found on any poker training site.

Target Population

Pokernews Strategy is shaping up to be an all around poker training site, with an obvious tilt towards NLHE and PLO. The current crop of videos is aimed at players of all levels, with introduction level videos, as well as mid to high-stakes games.

Unique Features

Perhaps the most unique feature at PokerNews Strategy is the Poker Taxes sub-tab, where players will find pertinent tax information and legal news for their neck of the woods. The site also puts a heavy emphasis on taking advantage of its affiliate program highlighted by rakeback deals. The site also guarantees that the pros will answer your questions in the forum area, a very nice touch.

No Limit Holdem (NLHE)

At the moment there are just over 60 no limit holdem videos on the site. Because PNS have a top coaching roaster, the content in these videos ranks amongst the best available online but the quantity of videos is shallow at the moment.

Other Games

Currently there are a small number of other videos on the site. There are 8 PLO videos, 3 Fixed Limit Holdem and 2 mixed game videos on the site. The content on these videos is definitely solid, but obviously lacks alot on the quantity side.

While PokerNews Strategy is relatively new the forums on the site are moderately active and look to have great potential for exciting discussion. PNS have opened unique forum sections and look to be focused on creating a facilitating community environment.

Expected Value: Is PokerNews Strategy Worth It?
It’s hard to give PokerNews Strategy a telling grade at the moment, because of the newness of the site, but from what we can see so far the site looks like it will be a solid competitor in the online poker training market. With a high quality group of instructors, the backing of Poker News, a very competitive price, and of course Tony G the site has a lot going for it.

A couple of downsides players will encounter are the current lack of content (which plagues all new sites in the market, and is usually quickly remedied), and while the video quality is very good, the site does not offer many re-sizing options which may frustrate some people who want to multi-task while watching the site’s training videos. If Pokernews Strategy irons out these two issues the could very well rank near the top of the online poker training site hierarchy in the future.
